As we step into August, with summer in full swing across Stockport – from the bright lights of the town centre to the green spaces of Bramhall Park, Reddish Vale and the Etherow Valley – many of us are enjoying holidays, family gatherings and warm days out.  However, this month also carries an important purpose: to shine a light on stroke – the UK’s fourth biggest cause of death, and a leading cause of severe disability.
Every year, around 1,500 people across Greater Manchester have a stroke – that’s roughly one every hour. Right here in Stockport, hundreds of local families are affected each year. The good news? Up to 80% of strokes are preventable, and knowing what to do when someone has a stroke can make all the difference between life, death, and long-term disability.
Yes, prevention is great and here at StrokeInformation we are all here for that but what about when its just happened to you or a family member?  We can help, in fact we want to help because there is nothing better than lived experience and you dont have to encounter this journey alone.
So from August we are planning to increase our reach, we have a few plans in the pipeline from running further drop in sessions to different times of the day and different days as we appreciate that not everyone impacted by Stroke can make a Monday either in person or via zoom.
Therefore we would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
I also want to ask that if you have had a stroke recently or had to take longer off work than anticipated, then we want to hear from you.  We are currently assisting a couple of survivors and their families as they try to navigate around returning back to work and the reasonable adjustments your employer should be implementing.
We Care Because We’ve Been There……
